I've tried Magento and it was a pain to install and the interface was extremely confusing.
I don't get how to change the layout of the store at all... In the Admin panel all it says is this:

What does that even mean?
Basically I'm looking for a vBulletin style template editor, where everything is right in the admin panel and I don't have to deal multiple individual text files.

There's no visual designer, but there are visual tools to aide in finding the right code to edit. Check under debugging/development in the admin panel.
It may be overkill, depending on what you need. But coding a cart system from scratch isn't going to be any easier.

I followed the directions on this page (http://www.magentoco...ntro-to-layouts) for Exercise #1 and changing Right to Left doesn't do a damn thing.

What's funny is that MS Notepad is the only text editor that doesn't support standard UNIX newlines, but rather a proprietary Microsoft format.
I'm not even exaggerating. Look here:
http://en.wikipedia....Newline_support
Notepad is the only text editor with a "no" in the Unix column.
