I am working on a blog system and I am wondering how to create subdomains on the fly like how 1gta and the mambo site do. So that when the person goes to mysite.blogsite.com it will go to the sign up and then give the user that subdomain so when the person goes to mysite.blogsite.com it will show there blog.

You need to get your hosting company to add this line to your site's virutal directory section in httpd.conf:

ServerAlias *.yoursite.com

It may also be possible with mod_rewrite, but I'm not sure.

ok so once that is in there umm how do I point it to each of the peoples sites.

well you could use the code:

$url = $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'];
$blog = parse_url($url);
$blog = explode(".", $blog['host']);
$blog = $blog[0];

And blog will give you the bit before the subdomain, including www

did you add that line of code into our virtual directory so we could create subdomains on the fly.

What would it matter if I did or not. I dont even have the blog thing near completion. But to answer your question I have not. I have to ask the hosting place (Dreamhost) if they will alow me to do that. And I hope they do.

I do *not* think dreamhost allows it. I have found a few things with dreamhost that if i didnt get my hosting so damn cheap, i would leave over.
